The Duke of Aumale acquired this panel under the name of Giotto, though credit is given today to his student Maso di Banco. It supposedly comes from an altarpiece painted for the Prado cathedral, while the other elements are kept in Budapest (The Coronation of the Virgin) and in Berlin (Virgin with belt). Here, Maso di Banco abandons traditional figuration over golden background for a somewhat outraged perspective view.
