Gabrielle of Estrées in her Bath

Its composition is borrowed from Clouet’s painting, Diane de Poitiers au Bain (Washington, National Gallery), but it features King Henry IV’s mistress, with her sons, César, Duke of Vendôme, born in 1594, and Alexandre of Vendôme, born in 1598, in his nanny's arms. The flowers and fruits symbolize the beauty and fertility of the young woman.
